DFW IBM Employee and Retiree Volunteers Needed for EWeek in February and March!http://dfwibmers.org/dfw-ibm-employee-and-retiree-volunteers-needed-for-eweek-in-february-and-march/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dfw-ibm-employee-and-retiree-volunteers-needed-for-eweek-in-february-and-march http://dfwibmers.org/dfw-ibm-employee-and-retiree-volunteers-needed-for-eweek-in-february-and-march/#comments Thu, 26 Jan 2012 01:51:57 +0000 Susan Johnson http://dfwibmers.org/?p=1119

Would you like to do fun hands-on activities with local students to get
them excited about science and technology? The 61st Annual Engineers Week
(EWeek) is February 19 – 25, and IBM needs volunteers for IBM-DFW EWeek
activities like classroom visits, science museum events, etc, that run all
through February and March with flexible scheduling opportunities.

Can you spare an hour or two to share your enthusiasm about technology?
It could change a child’s life! As a volunteer, you will receive training
and be provided with experiment materials, presentations, giveaways for the
students, and demonstrations for hands-on activities. Volunteer prep-time
will be kept to an absolute minimum. If it is your first time volunteering
for EWeek, you will be paired with an experienced volunteer. So, anybody
can be an EWeek volunteer!

You don’t have to be an engineer to participate. The main objective is to
show kids how much fun math and science can be!

1) Sign up now to volunteer! Sign up on On Demand Community or contact EWeek coordinators charla@us.ibm.com or sberly@us.ibm.com.

2) RSVP for the EWeek Kickoff Meeting! Lunch will be provided. Learn everything you’ll need to know at the EWeek Kickoff and Volunteer Training (highly recommended for all volunteers or potential volunteers). Please RSVP to charla@us.ibm.com by January 27. See meeting details/agenda and SIGN UP using the link below:

Engineers Week 2012 – Volunteer Kickoff and Training & Lunch
Monday, January 30, 2012, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
IBM Coppell, A1008

EWeek began in 1951 as an effort to increase to promote the engineering
profession. The scope of the program was broadened in 1990 to promote
science, math and technology literacy among K-12 students. IBMers will have
an opportunity to participate in EWeek 2012, with visits to schools and
other special events before, during, and after the “official” week February
19-25th.

IBM is strongly committed to EWeek – with IBM serving as Chairing Corporate
Sponsor in 1992, 2001, and again in 2008. As they have in past years,
thousands of IBMers will visit local K-12 schools to provide presentations
and demonstrations. Your support is needed for this national outreach
program!

Many D/FW IBMers have been generous enough to volunteer their time in the
past and through their efforts, tens of thousands of young people in the
D/FW area have been introduced to the excitement and wonders of math,
science, and technology.

For more information about IBM’s involvement with EWeek, check out

http://reswat3.watson.ibm.com/projects/new_ibm/new.nsf/pages/index.html

NOTE: Visits to schools may be scheduled any time in February or March (or
even later) on a date that is mutually convenient to the school and the IBM
volunteer. EWeek leaders charla@us.ibm.com and sberly@us.ibm.com will help
you preview educational materials prepared by the EWeek national committee,
plan and execute classroom visits, and assist in scheduling the visits.

Volunteers are welcome to use any of the science activity ideas on file,
ideas presented in the EWeek materials, ideas from the IBM-sponsored
TryScience website (http://www.tryscience.org/) and similar websites, or
develop their own. You can create your own presentation, or we can give
you a complete outline.

Questions? Contact charla@us.ibm.com
